A FOCUS ON MINIMIZING THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT ON THE PLANET
What are your thoughts on sustainability? What is important to you when you buy new home décor? Should textiles be OEKO-TEX® certified? A chair should be made of fast-growing tree sorts, such as bamboo or rattan? Or perhaps products should be produced in small local communities – supporting the people in it with responsible work. To us, sustainability is a lot of things – and we know, that we cannot be good at everything. But we have a responsibility to act on it where we can.

ABACA IS A STRONG AND FAST GROWING MATERIAL
Searching for new sustainable and responsible ways of producing beautiful home décor items are on the top of our “To-Do” list. Have you heard about Abaca before? It is a rapidly renewable material which can be harvested in less than a year.
A PRODUCT FROM BANANA PLANTS
The material is used for our handmade Abiola baskets. Abaca comes from its tree trunk, upon layer of layer of banana. The process is done by slicing the bark to get its outer layer, dry out in the sun and then sliced into desired diameter. After this process it is rolled manually to transform its shape like cord or rope. These processes are usually done by women in their leisure time after doing their house tasks. After becoming a rope, the weaving process begins to form into baskets. The baskets are treated with anti-fungus, anti-insect treatment and hereafter the shapes are being strengthen with water-based chemicals.

BAMBOO IS MADE TO LAST
Bamboo is a tougher material than any other common wood and, in comparison, bamboo is undoubtedly the most sustainable material. Bamboo emits more oxygen than any other plant – in fact, 35% more than the most common wood types and can grow up to nearly one meters per day.
Since bamboo also recycles large quantities of co2, you contribute – by selecting a product made from bamboo – a positively to the reduction of co2.
RATTAN IS BOTH BEAUTIFUL AND STRONG
The first step in the process of making our rattan furniture is to heat up the rattan. Afterwards, the rattan is molded into various shapes by hand and then attached together. Then the joints are wrapped with binding and as the last step, a coat of lacquer is applied.
Rattan is a fast-growing and sustainable material. It is also flexible and durable which makes it very suitable for furniture.
